REPORT ON FILM FEST HELD BY THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH IN ASSOCIATION WITH MEDIA CLUB AT T.K MADHAVA MEMORIAL COLLEGE, NANGIARKULANGARA. 

The department of English in association with media club held a film fest on 17 March 2022 at the college seminar hall. Special arrangements were put to effect to display the films in the seminar hall by the combined efforts of all the faculties Department of English.  All students of the English Department were a part of this event and attended the same with great enthusiasm. Dr. P P Sharmila , the Principal of College inaugurated the film fest by screening the first film.

The films screened were either classics or popular which were hailed both by the audience and the critics for it’s storyline, plot as well as the pleasure and leisure they imparted in the audience. There were a total of three films scheduled for the same event. The film fest started with a silent prayer.

The first film was :BACK TO FUTURE PART 1 which got screened at 10:15am. The film was considered to be one of the best sci-fi films ever made as well as a landmark of American cinema , revolved around the plot of time traveling , which highlighted the beneficial prospective of science and technology in the present and in the coming generations. The film’s success resulted in the Back to the Future franchise comprising of film sequels, animated television shows, comics, and video games. Students found the film greatly interesting and intriguing.

The second film was: AN OCCURENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE which got screened at 12:30pm. The film was an adaptation of the short story ”An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge ”by the American writer and Civil war veteran Ambrose Bierce which was described as “one of the most famous and frequently anthologized stories in American literature.” The film was a psychological thriller that takes many emotional turns and ended with an unsettling macabre twist. The film was of great current importance when the brutality of war got its worst side in Ukraine.

The third film was: THE ZOYA FACTOR which got screened at 2pm.The film is a light adaptation of Anuja chauhan’s 2008 novel of the same name. It was an Indian romantic comedy film that highlighted the hypothetical life of Indian Cricketers during 2011 Cricket World Cup, where many believe in superstitions like the lucky charm effect of someone or something to perform the best on the crease, than focusing on one’s own potential or abilities and settling one’s own flaws or drawbacks. The film brought home the idea that determination and hard work was the key to success.

All the three films attributed to the critical appreciation and aesthetic pleasure in the students .The event halted with a quick review and critical analysis by the students.

PTA Meeting

 

Strong Parents’-Teachers’ bond is the strength that helps to pull the students to go up and also pitches the students in to reach out and grasp their goals in a better way. PTA Meeting of the Department of English Fourth Semesters was held on 23rd June 2022 in the College seminar hall from 10 am to 1 pm in order to discuss the performance of students with their parents. The College Principal in- charge Dr  Rajeev S R has presided over the meeting. Mrs. Sarsha T S, Assistant Professor, Department of English, who has been the tutor to the batch welcomed everyone. Head of the department, Mrs. Soumya V S has addressed the parents and the students. Assistant professors Dr. Parvathy U, Ms. Sangeetha Hariharan, Ms. Athira M Raj, and Ms Remya V R have attended the meeting. Along with the Principal and the teachers, College PTA Vice-President Mr. Rajeev Balakrishnan (Yedukrishnan Rajeev) and some other parents have given their valuable opinions and feedback in the meeting. One on One discussion with each parent and teachers were also there in order to discuss their ward’s performance.

Reading plays a significant role in the development of country's socio-economic progress. Progress of a person, community and country depends on its rich knowledge base. Rich knowledge base depends on reading. 'Read and Grow' is the slogan of the P.N. Foundation.Honouring the father of the Library Movement, the late 

P.N. Panicker, Mathematics Department of T K Madhava Memorial College, Nangiarkulangara celebrated Reading Day on 23 June 2022. As rightly said by Vera Nazarian, Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light, thus the students got an opportunity to participate in various activities to inculcate the habit of reading.The students thoroughly enjoyed this stress free day as it ignited the minds of the young learners. Since, the students of today’s age lack the passion for reading, this initiative taken by the Mathematics Department  seems to be instrumental in bringing a positive change. It was indeed an enriching and fun-filled day for the students, which ended with great satisfaction and success.

The inaugural ceremony started at 10:45 am on 23 th June   2022 and lasted till 01:00 pm. Anjali( S2 maths) took over the control of the program. The program began with a prayer by department choir. Mrs.Sinumol S ( Asst. Prof. Of Mathematics) delivered welcome speech at the meeting which was chaired by Mrs .Renjini , Head of Mathematics Department .Dr. Rajeev S R ( HOD , Economics Department) officially inaugurated the meeting at 11.15 am.The meeting ended with the Vote of Thanks released by Kumari. The content of the competition was each teacher's reading experience and a trip to the books they already read.They  shared their experiences.

Dr. Rajeev S R ( HOD,Economics Dept.) became vocal about the book ,he currently reads.

Prof. Sreemon P (Former HOD, shared his priceless informations.Athira M Raj (Asst. Prof. ,Dept of English) shared her childhood memories about the way, she came to the paradise of reading.        

Her success is the way she conveyed the goodness of reading  to the listeners.

Prof.Abhilash Y (Asst. Prof.on contract, Dept of Malayalam) told his real life stories of reading.

Second session was poster making contest . The topic given for the participants was" Read… So you never feel alone" .They displayed their artistic skills through an array of posters.It was a great opportunity to watch these young minds creating and displaying their ideas on paper. The students thoroughly enjoyed the activity. One could see and feel the enthusiasm that the students had in their presentation. This activity kept the student engaged and it was organized to explore and encourage creativity in students and offer them a platform to showcase their skills. It inspired them to think and work creatively in order to promote artistic excellence.Time limit for the poster entries were upto 3:20 pm and the participants handed over their beautiful works within the given time to the coordinators.

All the posters made by participants were awesome.

The best posters were selected under the supervision of selected teachers.

Then we conducted Reading Competition .The content of the competition was taken from അദ്ധ്യാത്മ രാമായണം.

This was the best portion to check the fluency of participants in reading malayalam.The portion was given to the participants at the moment of competition.The competition was fierce for the participants.Reading competition started at 2.15 pm . The best readers were selected on the basis of fluency, correctness and time boundedness. We are happy that most of them read the portion clearly in limited time.

The program ended with the closing ceremony.

QUIZMASS

REPORT ON QUIZMAS

Quizmas,the carnival of quiz is an initiative by the department of English to inculcate the facility of reading, researching and knowledge of acquisition among students. The program will be conducted on a monthly basis on select authors as an interdepartmental program inviting and encouraging students to share their knowledge and bridge the gaps of ignorance. The first series of Quizmas was based on the famous British-Indian novelist, Salman Rishdie conducted on 22 June 2022 at College seminar hall. The welcome speech was delivered by Mrs. Soumya V S,HOD, Dept of English. The respected principal Dr Sharmila P P delivered the presidential address and inaugurated the Quiz series. Smt.Lekha K V, HOD of Department of Malayalam and Dr Aneesh Rajappan, HOD of Department of Physical Education delivered the felicitation address. A core team consists of Shreya Sasikumar, Anu B, Nandana Biju and Shajira N from first year BA English Language and Literature led the program. A team consists of 2 students from 6 departments viz; Economics, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Zoology and Commerce have participated in the event. The first round of the quiz was a written one in which each question carries 10 marks. It was followed by round II and III where each right answer got 10 marks and negative 5 marks for wrong answer. After the completion of three rounds, the department of Physics is leading the quiz series with 110 points. They are followed by team commerce with 70 points, Chemistry with 65 points, Zoology with 50 points, Mathematics with 40 points and Economics with 10 points.

An overall championship will be awarded to the department which scores maximum points at the end of Quizmas series in March 2023.
